Manasseh Wakawa (Leadership Development Leader)
Manasseh ran away from home to find a new life in a bigger city. Near the age of sixteen, he started working with the government. In 1971, he happened to be in a large church when a Nigerian government official spoke about those who had departed from following Jesus. Manasseh’s dad was a pastor and his family full of Christians so he thought the speaker was talking directly to him. After the message he approached him and said, “It seemed you were talking about me.” The speaker asked him why he felt this way and upon hearing Manasseh’s activities, told him to repent. Wakawa began going to the official’s home to talk. One day the official showed him the Four Spiritual Laws. He realized his spiritual bankruptcy and in 1972, he asked the Lord to become his Savior. Manasseh was so hungry he devoured the word and prayed and soon the Lord blessed him with a solid assurance of salvation.
God called Wakawa to preach the gospel in Nigeria. He did not have much education and felt inferior. So, he argued with God that he was not capable of preaching. Still the persistent voice of the Holy Spirit told him to write down his calling and to take it to his spiritual father. Manasseh obeyed and the government official with joy affirmed his new direction. As Manasseh actively shared his faith countless people came to Christ, many of whom he then trained. During this time, a friend introduced him to Campus Crusade for Christ in Jos and he ended up serving on staff with them for five years. Later he attended Lexington Baptis College where he received a B.A. in Biblical Studies in Lexington, KY. After graduating, he returned to ministry in Nigeria, in Maiduguri of Borno State, a heavy Muslim area where he grew up. Again, God gave him much fruit. Furthering his education, he earned a double Masters Degree in Biblical studies (New Testament) and in Christian Education at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland Ohio. Manasseh returned to Nigeria in 1997. For the last eleven years, he has faithfully led people to the Lord and ministered to them. What makes Manasseh so incredible is his effectiveness in training.
Riding from Abuja to Jos, Nigeria, David Joel, pastor of Agape Communion Church, shared with me an amazing story. There was a military coup in Nigeria in February 1976. Jurbe (a Captain in the Nigerian Army) was implicated in the coup. Despite his innocence, the authorities tried and executed him. Paul Wakkies, his younger brother, took his death hard. But on November 5, 1976, his wife, Kurnyang, bore him a daughter. They named her Lengkat, which means “don’t worry”! Paul took solace in the fact that although God allowed the death of his brother, He provided new life.
While speaking to youth at Evangelical Church West Africa (ECWA) David spotted Lengkat and was immediately attracted to her. After worship, he gave her his business card and asked her to call him. She called and they continued to communicate until David (sensing God’s confirmation), proposed. On April 5, 2003, David married her. Today, they have two children and a wonderful ministry in Jos. David is a mighty man of prayer that God is using to impact key people around his nation.
We enjoyed prayer walking early in the morning with close to 300 people around a field near where we conducted our meetings. We asked David to become the worldwide coordinator of our prayer walks, an incredibly important task. With the blessing and anointing of our Nigerian leaders, he has agreed. Please keep him in your prayers as he serves with First Cause in this critical ministry.
